12 Celebrity Narrated Audiobooks To Make You Feel Closer to the Stars

Nothing marries the joys of stardom with the wonders of reading quite like books read by famous people. Tired of sitting on YouTube for hours clicking through interviews? Fret no more! These big name audiobooks provide us with an entirely new platform to mega creep on celebrities and learn their opinions on every topic imaginable. Who needs reality TV when these shining stars sell us personal exposés directly?

More importantly, obsessing over the goings-on of celebrities is now slightly more high-brow. Yeah, it’s similar to that People magazine you browse in the grocery store checkout line. But this is tangible proof that celebrities have far classier things to say, complemented with just as many embarrassing pictures. Stalking famous people has never been so novel.

Here are 12 of the killer titles that’ll make you feel closer to the stars.

Laugh Out Loud Celebrity Audiobooks

Yes Please by Amy Poehler

Amy Poehler is so famous that she can get Carol Burnett, Kathleen Turner, Seth Meyers, Patrick Stewart and more to come read her book. Plus, her mom and dad join her, and it’s always heartwarming to know that celebrities are willing to subject their parents to the same embarrassments we all would if we had the chance.

Beastie Boys Book by Michael Diamond, Adam Horovitz

This one is for celebrity fanatics. Not only does this little gem let you into the lives of the hip-hop kings, but it also sports an insane list of celebrity contributors in the audiobook. I’m talking Snoop Dogg, Will Ferrell, Wes Anderson (what??) and 40 more celebrities. Half of which have no connections to music. Beastie Boys LinkedIn game must be pretty strong.

It’s hard to remember a time when Bryan Cranston wasn’t famous. He seems to hop from part to part, sweeping the screen with his performance wherever he goes. But he, too, has a story to tell about stardom from start to finish. This book is guided by failure, success and obviously a little bit of the fun of being famous.

Celebrity Narrators: All of the Acting, None of the Gossip

It doesn’t even stop with celebrity memoirs! They act, they read…they act while reading!

When it comes to books read by famous people, the charm lies in the easily discernable voice. Most people could close their eyes and still spit back the right name when listening to a movie. After the sheer volume of Parks and Recreation I’ve watched, I’m pretty sure that even my cat could identify Amy Poehler’s voice. But the quality of the book? That’s completely up to the celebrity’s skill in voice acting.

This is why many of the best celebrity audiobooks aren’t superstar authored. Famous people do rake in the big bucks for on-screen cameos, so what’s stopping them from audiobook cameos as well? Nothing! There are plenty of books out there that have nothing to do with the lives of famous people. It’s like all the fun of going to the movies only with headphones and a book (can I get any props for trying to sell this concept to non-audiobookers?)

Pedestrian Authored Books Read by Famous People

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld, narrated by Alan Cumming

I can’t think of Alan Cumming without replaying the entirety of Spy Kids in my mind, and that’s probably the main reason I highly recommend this title. If steampunk historical fiction narrated with all of the acting glory of Alan Cummings doesn’t immediately appeal to you, I don’t know how to help you.

Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz, narrated by Lin-Manuel Miranda

This guy is doing everything these days. He sings, he acts, he writes Disney songs (shout out to my girl, Moana). Now, he reads audiobooks. It’s no surprise that he’s pretty dang good at that, too.

This audiobook is read by more famous people than we could list. In addition to mega famous people like Nick Offerman (I’m telling you, his voice is just audio gold), there are plenty of famous authors narrating as well, including David Sedaris and the author. If large audiobook casts don’t terrify you, you’ll have an awesome time listening to this one.

Let’s just say that Meryl Streep has never disappointed me, and this production doesn’t change that. Delivering a cheeky, yet meaningful story about the destruction of a marriage, Meryl Streep once again slays us all with her talent.

Now that you’ve just dipped your toes into how the rich and famous live, why not dive deeper into their enticing stories? Go to hibooks and find all of these audiobooks to listen to now or on the go.

Madeline Farquharson

Madeline hails from the East Coast of the USA and has lived in Shanghai, Accra, Sydney, and Berlin. She has a limited social life outside of reading which is great because her book recommendations at hibooks are gold (who says a Literature major would never be useful?!). Her adoration of all things bookish inspired her to found and manage at least 8 book clubs at any given time, locally. Her other hobbies include crafting and forgetting to take pictures of her food before consuming at least half of it. She loves travel, hates cilantro, and doesn’t know how she feels about avocado.
